Dasylirion wheeleri, or Common Sotol, is a large, native succulent that is found on rocky slopes in semi-desert grassland habitats at 3000-6000 ft. The basal rosette of narrow, flexible, curve-toothed leaves grows to 4 ft tall and wide, and has a flowering stalk that can reach up to 8 ft tall. Sotol are extremely drought tolerant once established, and when mature the plant blooms annually from May-July. It is pollinated by native bees that you can see swarming the small, tightly clustered greenish-white flowers in the summer! Plant in full sun and well-draining soil.
