Cephalanthus occidentalis, or common buttonbush, is a shrub or small tree 2-7 m tall. This plant grows primarily in eastern north America, with smaller populations in the mountains of Arizona and California. Most distinctive are it's spherical white flowers which occur at the ends of branches. Buttonbush is found along the margins of streams, often in canyons in rocky soils to marshy land from 1,500-4,500 ft. Plant in part shade, medium-high water. Flowers June-September.
