Prosopis velutina, or Velvet Mesquite, is a deciduous tree in the pea family native to the southwest US and northwestern Mexico in mostly Arizona and Sonora. Velvet mesquite survives in drought conditions, tolerates extreme cold, is incredibly deep rooted, can grow to 50ft and can be found from 3,000 - 5,000 ft elevation. The beans and pods are prolific and edible, and is an excellent tree supporting insect and bird biodiversity in the Sky Islands. A keystone of mid elevations in the Sky Islands that has outcompeted much of the natural grasslands throughout the region.  We know this plant is not a hybrid because our seed is sourced in Patagonia where there are no other mesquite species to hybridize with.

Prosopis velutina, o mesquite, es un árbol caducifolio de la familia de los guisantes nativo del suroeste de los EE. UU. y el noroeste de México, principalmente en Arizona y Sonora. El mezquite sobrevive en condiciones de sequía, tolera el frío extremo, tiene raíces increíblemente profundas, puede crecer hasta 17 metros y se puede encontrar a una altura de 3,000 a 5,000 pies. Los frijoles y las vainas son prolíficos y comestibles, y es un excelente árbol que sustenta la biodiversidad de insectos y aves en las Islas del Cielo. Una piedra angular de elevaciones medias en Islas del Cielo que ha superado a gran parte de los pastizales naturales en toda la región.
