Bothriochloa barbinoidis, also known as Cane Beard Grass or Cane Bluestem, is a large perennial bunchgrass. Immediately obvious is the tuft of hairy spikelets, which look cottony and seem to glow white or silver from a distance. Grows to 25-50 inches tall. Delightfully, the fresh seeds smell like blueberries when crushed or rubbed to release the scent. Found in open range lands, on dry, rocky or sandy slopes and plains, and graded roadsides from 1,000-6,000 ft; flowers August-September. Widespread throughout much of the southern half of the US; extends south through Mexico, Central America to Argentina. This plant responds very well to fire and is a prolific seed producer. Also a valuable forage species.
