Commonly known as Jerusalem thorn, Parkinsonia aculeata is a native tree with smooth, green bark on upper branches and brown, rough bark on trunk and main limbs, to 40 ft tall. Distinguished from other Palo Verdes by it's very long, thin, drooping leaves. Flowers are showy, bright yellow and red-orange, and blooming March-May. Found along arroyos, sandy plains, or other low-lying areas where water accumulates in the low desert from 3,000-4,500 ft. Found in most states in southern US, from CA, NV, AZ and UT, east to FL; south throughout Mexico and South America.
